UnitedHealth recently announced that an external audit found nearly 97% of diagnoses made by its HouseCalls home-health unit were supported by patients’ medical records. The company’s HouseCalls program sends clinicians to perform physical exams and discuss patients’ medical history.
Audit Findings
The audit, conducted by FTI Consulting, analyzed 200 visits and 494 diagnoses. According to the report, 3.4% of diagnoses made by HouseCalls clinicians in 2025 were not supported. UnitedHealth’s executive vice president, Wyatt Decker, stated that the company aims to improve documentation practices to ensure that diagnoses are accurately reflected in patients’ medical records.
The HouseCalls program is part of UnitedHealth’s Optum primary care business, which operates Medicare Advantage plans for adults 65 and older and people with disabilities. The program has faced scrutiny from lawmakers, who have questioned the accuracy of diagnoses made during home visits.
UnitedHealth’s CEO, Stephen Hemsley, has committed to doing better and believes that home visits help seniors avoid more expensive medical emergencies. The company has promised to review its businesses and make improvements as needed.
