Unions Fund Opposition to State Initiatives

Public unions in Washington state are using member dues to oppose several state initiatives, including a measure to repeal an income tax passed by Democratic state legislators earlier this year. The Washington Education Association (WEA) and other unions have contributed significant funds to oppose these initiatives, raising questions about the use of member dues for political advocacy.

Union Involvement in Politics

Public unions like the WEA do more than bargain over wages and working conditions. They also endorse candidates and ballot measures, produce voter guides, and use direct mail and other member communications to urge workers and their families to support certain causes. This level of political involvement has led some to argue that workers should have more control over how their dues are used.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in Janus v. AFSCME affirmed that public workers cannot be required to fund a union as a condition of employment. However, some argue that public employers should do more to inform workers about their rights and options when it comes to union membership and dues.

According to the Public Disclosure Commission, the WEA and other unions have contributed over $1 million to oppose Initiative 26-645, the income tax repeal initiative. This level of funding has sparked concerns about the influence of union money in state politics and the potential for workers to be coerced into supporting causes they may not agree with.
