Sophie Woods, a 42-year-old ultrarunner from New Zealand, has set a new record for completing the Via Alpina, a challenging endurance challenge that spans across 8 European countries.
The Journey
Woods began her journey in Trieste, Italy on July 4 and finished in Monaco on August 2, completing the 1,240-mile trek in just 29 days. This feat beats the previous record set by British runner Jake Catterall in 2024 by six days.
Woods’ journey was not without its challenges, as she had to overcome a variety of terrain, including steep rock ascents and night runs. She also had to contend with a heatwave that gripped Europe during her run, with temperatures soaring past 100 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.
Despite the challenges, Woods persevered, fueled by her determination and the support of her husband and dog, who provided emotional support and food supplies along the way.
