At a fundraising luncheon on George Street, Commander Mykola Melnyk spoke to a crowd of Ukrainian‑American residents and supporters at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. Melnyk, a decorated veteran who now serves in a drone unit, used the historic Alamo metaphor to stress the urgency of the war in Ukraine and its implications for the United States and the broader West.
Alamo metaphor and call to action
“We are now the world’s soldiers at Fort Alamo,” Melnyk said while holding a cup of hot borscht. “We bear the shield and sword for the entire democracies of the West.” He warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin “hates America” and will continue to threaten the West unless stopped.
Personal story and foundation mission
Melnyk, a 41‑year‑old divorced single father of a six‑year‑old daughter, lost both legs in combat and now leads the Brave Children of Ukraine foundation. The 501(c)(3) organization provides wrap‑around services to children whose soldier parents have been killed, as well as support for families with parents serving on the front lines.
Local political support
U.S. Rep. Rosa De Lauro and Sen. Richard Blumenthal attended the event, delivering passionate remarks. Blumenthal criticized President Trump for policies he said aid Russia, then expressed pride in Melnyk’s dedication, stating, “The American people stand with Ukraine.” De Lauro echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for continued assistance.
Fundraising and tangible aid
Melnyk presented De Lauro with a small silver box containing a recovered piece of a Russian Kh‑101 cruise missile, calling it “evidence” of Ukraine’s defensive successes. He linked increased U.S. support for the Ukrainian army to fewer orphaned children, underscoring the humanitarian impact of military aid.
Message to the next generation
When asked how he explains the conflict to his daughter, Melnyk described nightly bombings, school closures, and bunker alarms, urging her to study hard so she can help rebuild her country after the war.
