As a record-breaking heatwave sweeps across Europe and Ukraine, soldiers are facing extreme conditions inside Soviet-era tanks. The tanks, which can weigh between 41 and 45 tons, become heat traps under the summer sun.
Challenges on the Battlefield
Chief Sergeant Sympatiaha of the 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade described the harsh conditions: ‘The vehicle gets very hot after completing its mission. The temperature inside can become really hot.’ Unlike Western-supplied tanks, these Soviet-era tanks have no air conditioning.
Despite the heat, the crew remains committed to preventing Russian forces from advancing. ‘We’re continuing to fight the Russian forces, preventing them from advancing and trying to push them out of here,’ Sympatiaha said.
Temperatures in the Zaporizhzhia region have hovered around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and are forecast to climb to 36 degrees Celsius by Tuesday.
