Ukraine death toll rises to 38 after Russian ammunition depot strike, Zelensky says

President Volodymyr Zelensky reported Sunday that the death toll from a Russian strike on an ammunition depot in Ukraine’s Kyiv region has climbed to 38, with four individuals still unaccounted for. The attack, which took place late Friday, targeted a military facility storing artillery shells, mines, drones and other munitions.

Impact on the Kyiv region

Zelensky shared the update via his Telegram channel, noting that first‑responders were able to extinguish most of the resulting fires. He warned, however, that contamination from the explosion remains significant and cleanup efforts will continue as long as necessary. Video released by the president shows firefighting crews battling flames and clearing debris from damaged structures.

Russia’s intensified aerial campaign

According to Zelensky, the strike is part of a broader Russian offensive that has intensified over the past week. He said Russian forces have launched nearly 2,000 strike drones, more than 1,600 aerial bombs and 31 missiles in recent days, including ballistic missiles supplied by North Korea.

“We are seeking just responses to every Russian strike and crime. They will certainly come,” Zelensky said, emphasizing Ukraine’s resolve to hold Moscow accountable for its aggression.

Broader context

The Kyiv‑region depot attack marks the deadliest Russian strike in the capital’s vicinity this year. While the Ukrainian capital has endured frequent shelling, this particular assault caused the highest number of civilian casualties recorded in the area so far.

International observers have condemned the escalation, noting that attacks on civilian‑adjacent facilities raise serious humanitarian concerns. The United Nations has called for unhindered access for humanitarian aid and for all parties to respect the laws of armed conflict.

What comes next

Zelensky’s administration continues to coordinate rescue and recovery operations, while also monitoring the ongoing threat of further Russian air raids. The president urged citizens to stay vigilant, follow official safety guidance, and support emergency responders who are working around the clock.

As the conflict persists, the Ukrainian government remains focused on defending its sovereignty, protecting civilians, and seeking international support to counter Russia’s aggressive campaign.
