UK regulator pledges continuous monitoring for AI‑based medical devices

London – In a move that underscores the United Kingdom’s commitment to patient safety and cutting‑edge health technology, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that AI‑based medical devices will be subject to continuous, post‑approval monitoring. The policy shift means manufacturers can no longer rely on a single pre‑market safety check; instead, they must demonstrate ongoing performance as their algorithms evolve in real‑world clinical settings.

Implementation plan to be released by spring 2027

The government has accepted all 44 recommendations from a recent expert report on AI medical device regulation. A draft implementation plan is expected by the end of the year, with a comprehensive final plan slated for publication in spring 2027. The plan will outline clear delivery targets and timelines for integrating the new requirements across the National Health Service (NHS).

Why continuous monitoring matters

Lawrence Tallon, Chief Executive of the MHRA, told Reuters that AI systems used in health care are “non‑deterministic,” meaning they can adapt and change as they process new data. Continuous surveillance will help ensure that any unexpected behavior is identified quickly, protecting patients from potential harm while allowing clinicians to benefit from the latest advances in artificial intelligence.

AI Airlock program expands to post‑market phase

The agency also announced that it will begin accepting applications for the third phase of its AI Airlock program. This phase focuses on post‑market surveillance and lifecycle monitoring once devices are in clinical practice, reinforcing the UK’s position as a global leader in responsible AI health regulation.

International interest in the UK approach

Countries around the world are looking to the UK for guidance. Tallon noted that many nations have reached out to learn from Britain’s comprehensive framework, which is the first of its kind to address the unique challenges posed by AI‑driven medical tools.

What this means for patients and providers

For patients, the new regime promises greater transparency and safety as AI tools become more prevalent in diagnostics, treatment planning, and monitoring. For health‑care providers, it offers a clear regulatory pathway that balances innovation with accountability, ensuring that cutting‑edge technologies can be adopted without compromising care standards.

Looking ahead

As the NHS continues to integrate AI into everyday practice, the MHRA’s proactive stance aims to safeguard public health while fostering an environment where innovators can thrive. By mandating ongoing oversight, the United Kingdom sets a responsible example for other nations navigating the complex intersection of technology and medicine.
