A former UK police officer, Luke Salmons, has reached a confidential settlement with the North Yorkshire Police after he alleged discrimination against his Christian beliefs. Salmons, a former community support officer, said he was suspended and forced out of policing after he asked questions about Islam during a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) workplace training in 2024.
Background
The training courses, hosted by external trainers, focused on developing a new policy on race, religion, and culture. Salmons said the majority of the courses focused on Islam, and during one session, the trainers chanted, ‘Islam is a religion of peace,’ which he found to be indoctrination rather than a training course.
Salmons asked questions about the war in Gaza and the concept of jihad during a training held by a Muslim sergeant. Although the exchange was respectful, Salmons was suspended two days later. He was told to leave the station and was allegedly told by his inspector, ‘I don’t like your beliefs,’ which Salmons believed was a reference to his Christian faith.
Investigation and Settlement
Salmons was put under investigation and advised to apologize, but he didn’t agree that he had done anything wrong. He eventually resigned after eight months due to the hardship on his family. A North Yorkshire Police disciplinary panel initially found his behavior to be ‘gross misconduct,’ but the decision was later overturned by the Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police, Tim Forber.
Salmons pursued litigation against the force, claiming religious discrimination against his Christian beliefs. The North Yorkshire Police recently reached a settlement with Salmons, although he has yet to receive an apology or be offered his job back.
The North Yorkshire Police stated that they are an ‘inclusive employer and respect the rights of all individuals to their beliefs,’ but the expression of those beliefs must be done with ‘due consideration of respect and courtesy’ in line with their force values and behaviors framework.
