UFC Freedom 250 Faces Fitness Benchmarks and $60M Budget Challenges

As UFC Freedom 250 approaches, service members eager to attend the event on the White House South Lawn must meet specific fitness criteria. According to Pentagon documents, troops need to achieve a waist-to-height ratio of 0.55 or lower, with the Marine Corps adhering to a stricter 0.52 benchmark. This requirement aligns with the Pentagon’s new standards for body composition and physical readiness introduced earlier this year.

Fitness and Travel Requirements

In addition to meeting these fitness standards, service members must also pass their branch-specific physical fitness tests to qualify for one of the 1,200 active-duty tickets set aside by UFC CEO Dana White. The Pentagon encourages prioritizing junior enlisted troops and officers from outside the Washington, D.C., area. However, attendees must arrange and fund their own travel to the nation’s capital.

Event Logistics and Oversight

The UFC Freedom 250 event, with a reported production budget of $60 million, has faced logistical challenges since its announcement. The D.C. Combat Sports Commission, which typically oversees such events, has no jurisdiction over this fight night as it takes place on federal property. Additionally, oversight for Crypto.com’s $1 million fighter bonus pool remains unclear, raising questions about dispute management.

Fight Card and Public Reception

The fight card for UFC Freedom 250 has received mixed reviews. Despite early hype from former President Trump about potential title fights, the finalized card features only two. Notable fighters like Islam Makhachev, Jon Jones, and Conor McGregor, who lobbied for spots, were not included. The main event features Topuria against Gaethje, with Pereira and Gane competing for interim heavyweight gold. The undercard includes Sean O’Malley, Michael Chandler, Bo Nickal, and Diego Lopes.

The event coincides with Flag Day and Trump’s 80th birthday, adding to its significance. Construction is underway on the South Lawn, with a fan festival planned for June 13 and 14, featuring UFC and WWE appearances and a performance by the Zac Brown Band.
