EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – In a display of discipline and teamwork, cadets and personnel at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) broke the Guinness World Record for the most people performing synchronized push‑ups in a single minute.
The record attempt took place at 11:57 a.m. on Oct. 2, with 3,703 participants completing full‑range push‑ups for 60 consecutive seconds. The effort eclipsed the prior record of 3,068 set by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Purpose and preparation
USAFA officials said the event was designed to showcase the cadet wing’s discipline, grit and shared purpose – qualities essential to developing future leaders and warfighters. Each push‑up required participants to lower themselves until their elbows formed a 90‑degree angle before locking out at the top, following official Guinness regulations.
Connection to service rivalry
The record‑breaking attempt occurred less than 24 hours before the Air Force Falcons hosted the Navy Midshipmen in their annual service rivalry game at Falcon Stadium. The timing highlighted the friendly competition between the nation’s service academies.
Comments from academy leadership
“At the Academy, our mission is to develop leaders and warfighters ready to fight, win, and lead in service to our nation,” said Brig. Gen. Brandon J. Tellez, commandant of cadets. “This world record attempt is about more than earning a place in the record books. It reflects the discipline, grit, and shared purpose we work to build every day in the Cadet Wing.”
The successful attempt not only earned USAFA a new place in the Guinness World Records but also reinforced the academy’s emphasis on physical fitness, teamwork and the values that underpin the United States’ defense forces.
