Michigan’s SAT Readiness Drops to One‑Quarter of Juniors, State Leaders Call for Stronger Curriculum

Michigan’s latest SAT data show that just one in four 11th‑grade students met the College Board’s college‑readiness standards for the 2025‑2026 school year, slipping slightly from 26.6% the year before. The decline comes amid broader concerns about reading scores and a persistent absenteeism rate above 27%.

What the Numbers Mean

The College Board defines college readiness as a 75% chance of earning at least a C in first‑semester, credit‑bearing college courses in math, reading or writing. This year, 26.5% of Michigan students met the math benchmark and 52.1% met the reading‑and‑writing benchmark.

State Perspective

State education officials stress that the SAT is only one measure of student success. “We have to look at the whole picture, including advanced‑placement performance, dual‑enrollment participation, and career‑technical achievements,” said Michigan Department of Education spokesperson Bob Wheaton.

Michigan’s goal is for 60% of working‑age adults to hold a post‑secondary credential by 2030. As of 2024, less than 52% had earned such a credential, underscoring the urgency of improving college‑readiness metrics.

Local Leaders Respond

Principals across the state acknowledge the SAT results while emphasizing broader student development. “A single score doesn’t determine a student’s future. Hard work, leadership, and character matter just as much,” said Sarah Allen, principal of Grayling High School.

Many districts, including Grayling and Belding High Schools, offer test‑prep courses to help juniors prepare for the SAT, even as the state does not require them. Michael Ostrander, an assistant superintendent, noted that these courses can improve school metrics and increase scholarship opportunities.

Equity Gaps Remain

Socio‑economic disparities continue to affect performance. Only 11.5% of economically disadvantaged students met the college‑readiness benchmark, compared with 36% of their more affluent peers.

EdTrust‑Midwest senior policy analyst Charlotte Pierce warned that the SAT results align with “other concerning opportunity gaps” seen in schools serving high‑need populations.

Alternative Indicators

Emily McEvoy, director of data and assessment for the Anchor Bay School District, argues that college‑credit attainment may be a stronger indicator of post‑secondary success than a single test score. “Students earning college credit early often succeed in higher education, even if their SAT scores are lower,” she said.

State officials also point to rising participation and success in Advanced Placement exams, dual‑enrollment programs, and career‑technical education as positive trends that complement SAT data.

Looking Ahead

Michigan’s education leaders plan to use the SAT data as a diagnostic tool, not a definitive verdict. “Big data like the SAT can point us to areas that need attention, but local districts must examine their own curricula and student support systems,” said Steven Snead, supervisor of curriculum and assessment for Oakland Schools.

As the state works toward its 2030 credential goal, policymakers and educators stress the importance of a balanced approach that includes rigorous coursework, expanded college‑credit opportunities, and targeted support for disadvantaged students.
