Tyre school basketball court turned into shelter for families displaced by conflict

TYRE, Lebanon – A public‑school basketball court in the southern city of Tyre has become a lifeline for dozens of families who have been uprooted by the ongoing conflict with Israel. The court, once a place for recreation, now holds rows of temporary rooms where mothers, fathers, and their children sleep, eat and try to rebuild a sense of normalcy.

The shelter was set up after villages nearby were either razed or remain under Israeli occupation, leaving residents with nowhere else to go. Local volunteers and aid groups have installed partitions, basic bedding, and a small kitchen area inside the court’s perimeter. “We wanted to give these families a safe place to stay, even if it is just for a night,” said a community organizer who helped coordinate the effort.

Children play on the edges of the court during daylight, their laughter a stark contrast to the surrounding devastation. Parents, many of whom have lost their homes and livelihoods, gather to share news and support one another. The makeshift shelter also serves as a distribution point for food, water, and medical supplies delivered by humanitarian NGOs operating in the region.

While the basketball court provides immediate relief, officials acknowledge that it is only a temporary solution. The Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs has pledged to assess longer‑term housing options for the displaced, but resources remain stretched thin amid the broader economic crisis gripping the country.

International observers note that the situation in southern Lebanon reflects a larger pattern of civilian displacement caused by the protracted Israeli‑Lebanese conflict. The United Nations has called for increased protection of civilians and for all parties to respect humanitarian law.

Community response and challenges

Local churches and faith‑based groups have joined the effort, offering prayer services and counseling for families coping with trauma. The involvement of faith communities underscores the region’s reliance on religious institutions to fill gaps left by limited government capacity.

Security concerns persist, however. The proximity of the shelter to the front lines means that any escalation in hostilities could endanger the occupants. Residents have been urged to stay informed about safety alerts and to move to designated safe zones if the situation deteriorates.

Despite these challenges, the transformation of a basketball court into a sanctuary illustrates the resilience and solidarity of Tyre’s citizens. As the conflict continues, the hope remains that more permanent solutions will emerge, allowing displaced families to return to rebuilt homes and reclaimed villages.
