Two Workers Killed in Explosions at Brent Industries Plant in Toledo

Explosions rocked the Brent Industries industrial recycling plant in Toledo just before 5 a.m. on Tuesday, killing two employees—a man and a woman—and leaving two or three other workers with minor injuries, according to Toledo Fire Chief Allison Armstrong.

Immediate response and fire fighting

Fire crews arrived to find flames and thick black smoke pouring from the building. The blaze quickly consumed most of the roof and blew out the walls, prompting a large response from local fire engines and emergency personnel. Crews worked to contain the fire while also addressing hazardous material concerns, including runoff and the presence of mineral‑spirit tanks used in the plant’s cleaning processes.

Environmental monitors later reported no immediate hazardous threat to the surrounding air. Residents within a half‑mile of the site were advised to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area until officials deemed it safe.

Victims and injuries

First‑responders discovered the bodies of the two workers inside the smoldering structure. The identities of the victims have not been released. Several other employees, who were on the shift change at the time, suffered only minor injuries and were treated on site.

One nearby resident, Demetrius Langston, said he felt the shock wave from the explosions half a mile away. He ran outside, captured video of a massive plume of smoke, and described the experience: “The shock waves came down the block… Then we all heard it again. Boom! You could feel it.”

Investigation underway

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation, which may last up to six months. OSHA officials have not yet disclosed any preliminary findings about the cause of the explosions.

Brent Industries, founded in 1977 in Brent, Alabama, operates recycling and textile‑reconditioning facilities in both Alabama and Toledo. The company’s Toledo plant uses mineral spirits—a petroleum‑based solvent—for cleaning work gloves and textiles. In 2015, the company’s Alabama location experienced a fatal explosion that OSHA traced to flammable vapor from mineral spirits igniting in an industrial washing machine. That incident resulted in a $27,000 fine and several safety citations.

OSHA also cited Brent Industries in 2004 for serious violations at the Toledo plant after a steam release from a washing machine exposed workers to temperatures of 207 °F, highlighting a history of safety concerns at the company.

Community impact and next steps

The tragedy has shaken the Toledo community, prompting calls for stricter safety oversight at industrial facilities. Local officials continue to monitor air quality and have urged anyone who observed smoke or smelled chemicals to stay indoors and follow safety instructions.

Brent Industries has been contacted via phone and email, but no comment has been released at this time. The company’s website notes its commitment to reducing waste and saving money through recycling, but the recent incident underscores the risks inherent in industrial operations.

Authorities will keep the public informed as the investigation progresses and as additional information becomes available.
