Two Teenagers Killed in Head‑On I‑70 Crash Near Rifle, Colorado

Garfield County, Colorado – In the early hours of Sunday, a tragic head‑on collision on Interstate 70 claimed the lives of two teenagers. The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to the crash around 2:30 a.m. on the westbound lanes just east of the town of Rifle.

What happened

CSP investigators say a 17‑year‑old male was operating a Subaru eastbound in the westbound lanes, directly opposite traffic. At the same time, a semi‑tractor trailer and a GMC SUV driven by an 18‑year‑old female were traveling westbound. The Subaru struck the GMC head‑on, and the impact forced the GMC into the trailer being hauled by the semi.

Both teenage drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi‑tractor trailer was not injured.

Victims identified

The Garfield County Coroner’s Office released the names of the victims on Monday. The 17‑year‑old male in the Subaru was identified as Kyle McKinney, and the 18‑year‑old female in the GMC was identified as Reese Allen.

Investigation ongoing

CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation, and officials say the cause of the crash remains under review. No further details have been released pending the ongoing inquiry.

Community response

Local residents expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of two young lives. Community leaders urged drivers to remain vigilant, especially on high‑speed corridors like I‑70, and to respect lane assignments to prevent similar tragedies.

Authorities remind motorists that traveling in the correct direction of traffic is a fundamental safety rule that protects families and preserves the sanctity of life on our roads.

Safety reminders

The Colorado State Patrol continues to emphasize the importance of:

  • Staying in the proper lane for your direction of travel.
  • Avoiding distractions while driving, especially for young drivers.
  • Maintaining safe speeds and following distances.
