Two men sentenced to 12 years after fatal West Side crash

A crash on the West Side of San Antonio left a 24-year-old man dead and led to two lengthy prison sentences after investigators tied the wreck to intoxicated driving and fleeing the scene. Arthur Hugo Ruiz and Juan Escalante Linares are at the center of the case, which unfolded near the intersection of West Travis and Northwest 24th streets and drew attention from the San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

The collision happened just after midnight on March 8, 2025, when a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 29-year-old Arthur Hugo Ruiz ran past a stop sign and struck a Nissan Sentra. SAPD investigators said Ruiz was intoxicated at the time of the impact, and the force of the crash ejected the Sentra’s passenger, 24-year-old Victor Manuel Zarate-Avila, who later died. The Bexar County Medical Examiner confirmed the fatal outcome, and the case moved quickly into criminal proceedings.

Ruiz fled the scene on foot but was arrested a few blocks away, according to SAPD’s preliminary reports. He admitted to police that he had been driving while intoxicated and was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center the same day. Prosecutors later charged him with intoxication manslaughter with a deadly weapon, a serious felony that carries heavy penalties when a death is involved.

On Monday the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office announced that Ruiz received a 12-year prison sentence for intoxication manslaughter with a deadly weapon. That sentence reflects both the intoxication and the deadly consequences of the crash, and it underscores the legal system’s response when impaired driving ends another person’s life. The punishment aims to hold the driver accountable after the investigation and trial established the circumstances of the wreck.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as 29-year-old Juan Escalante Linares, also faced legal consequences tied to the same collision. SAPD said Linares fled the scene initially and surrendered three days later; he was booked into the Bexar County jail on March 11, 2025. Prosecutors eventually charged him with collision involving death and, separately, punished him for failing to stop and render aid in the aftermath.

According to the district attorney’s office, Linares was sentenced to 12 years in prison for failing to stop and render aid, a penalty equal to Ruiz’s despite the different nature of the offenses. Records show Linares spent just over 10 months behind bars before being released on January 15 of this year, and he faced a collision-involving-death charge filed on Dec. 1, 2025. The timeline highlights how multiple criminal actions and paperwork can overlap in cases with complex fact patterns and multiple defendants.

The case drew coordinated attention from local authorities, with SAPD handling the initial crash investigation and the Bexar County DA’s office pursuing charges based on their findings. In fatal collisions where intoxication and fleeing the scene are alleged, prosecutors typically rely on witness statements, forensic evidence, and vehicle damage analysis to piece together what happened. That investigative work was central to securing convictions and the subsequent prison terms handed down to both drivers.

Families and neighbors on the West Side felt the impact of the crash and the resulting legal fallout, a reminder of how a single moment behind the wheel can change multiple lives forever. The department and the DA’s office released information to the public as the case progressed, framing the sentencing as the conclusion of a multi-stage criminal process. For residents and anyone who drives, the episode serves as a stark warning about the consequences of intoxicated driving and failing to render aid after an accident.
