Stevens High student pistol-whipped in off-campus robbery; three suspects arrested

A Stevens High School student was assaulted off campus Monday afternoon near the 9800 block of Potranco Road in San Antonio, and San Antonio police along with Northside Independent School District police and the Texas Department of Public Safety took the lead on locating and detaining suspects at a nearby apartment complex. The brief but violent encounter left the student shaken but not seriously injured, prompted a temporary secure status at Stevens High School and nearby Murnin Elementary School, and launched an ongoing SAPD robbery investigation that agencies say is still active. KSAT reported on the district’s confirmation and law enforcement’s on-scene response as officers pieced together the sequence of events. Local officials and parents are watching closely as authorities work to sort motive, identity and whether the incident connects to any broader safety concerns around the campus.

The call came in just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday when officers were dispatched to a convenience store close to Stevens High School, according to police logs. San Antonio police say the student was approached by three people who demanded belongings, and when the student replied he had nothing to hand over the suspects allegedly pistol-whipped him before fleeing the scene. That violent escalation turned what might have been a quick robbery into a criminal assault, and witnesses and store video reportedly helped officers triangulate the suspects’ direction of travel. From there SAPD coordinated with Northside ISD police and DPS to canvass the area for leads and potential shelter points.

Investigators followed tips to an apartment complex not far from the convenience store and took three people into custody after locating them there, officials said. An SAPD sergeant on the scene told KSAT the suspects are not Northside ISD students, a detail that law enforcement emphasized to separate the incident from on-campus discipline or student-versus-student conflict. The student victim suffered injuries that police described as not serious, and medical attention was provided on site or at a nearby facility as needed. Authorities are continuing interviews and evidence collection to build the case and determine whether further charges beyond robbery will be appropriate.

Northside Independent School District reacted quickly to the scene, temporarily restricting movement at Stevens High School and Murnin Elementary as officers cleared the area and confirmed there was no ongoing threat. “were temporarily placed on a secure status while law enforcement worked to resolve the situation,” the NISD spokesperson said in a statement, and district officials notified families with standard safety messaging while the investigation unfolded. School officials also coordinated with SAPD and NISD police to review access control footage and to confirm student and staff whereabouts during the afternoon dismissal window. Parents reported heightened anxiety about the proximity of the attack to campus drop-off and pick-up zones.

SAPD has classified the matter as a robbery investigation while detectives sort motive, suspect identification and whether the incident was targeted or opportunistic. That classification frames the inquiry around theft with force and opens paths to charges that carry serious penalties if prosecutors can prove the alleged use of a weapon or intent to commit theft. DPS involvement signals the department provided investigative resources or assistance in tracking the suspects to the apartment complex, and Northside ISD police helped secure school perimeters to prevent spillover during the operation. Law enforcement stressed that the situation was contained and that arrests were made without further injuries to students or staff.

Community reaction has been sharp and immediate, with neighbors and parents urging clearer communication and more visible patrols around school corridors that intersect commercial strips like Potranco Road. Some parents expressed concern about students walking to nearby stores after school, and others called for stepped-up collaboration between the district and city police to identify repeat trouble spots. School administrators said they would review supervision patterns around dismissal times and consider temporary measures to discourage students from lingering in businesses near campus. For now, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of students while detectives continue to interview witnesses and sort the evidence.

As the criminal case moves forward, SAPD investigators asked anyone with additional information, tips or footage from the area near the convenience store to come forward to help complete the picture of what happened. The department reiterated that its investigation remains ongoing and that it will share updates as charges are filed or new facts are confirmed. In the meantime, Stevens High School and families in the Northside Independent School District are left to process a sudden, violent disruption to what had been a routine school day, and officials say student support services will be available to anyone affected.
