Two-County Crime Spree Culminates in Downtown Orlando Arrest

A dramatic crime spree spanning two counties ended in downtown Orlando with the arrest of 24-year-old Robert Lee Smith. Smith, who was apprehended by law enforcement, faces charges of fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, and driving without a license in Orange County. Additional charges may be filed in Seminole County.

Incident Details

The series of events began in Sanford, where a witness reported a minor collision on Upsala Road. The suspect, Smith, allegedly exited a silver car, brandished a firearm, and threatened the other driver. The witness, who captured the incident on video, described it as one of the scariest experiences of her life.

After the confrontation, Smith reportedly moved his vehicle and entered a red Kia, which then left the scene. The situation escalated in downtown Orlando, where the same red Kia was involved in further collisions, including crashing into an Amazon delivery van.

Law Enforcement Response

Orange County deputies attempted to stop the vehicle near Colonial Drive and Orange Avenue. Although Smith initially complied with orders to exit the vehicle, he allegedly re-entered and drove off, leading to a pursuit that ended with the vehicle crashing. Smith attempted to flee on foot but was quickly subdued with a Taser and arrested.

Legal Proceedings

During his initial court appearance, the judge reviewed Smith’s extensive criminal history, labeling him a “danger to the community” and setting bail at $21,000. Smith’s past includes a conviction for violating an anti-stalking injunction and a previous charge of domestic violence, which was recently dropped due to the victim’s lack of cooperation.

Authorities have not charged the individual initially driving the red Kia. The investigation continues as law enforcement agencies from both counties collaborate on the case.
