Twin Falls Sheriff Urges Water Safety After Tragic Drowning Incident

The Twin Falls community is grappling with the heartbreaking loss of a 12-year-old boy who tragically drowned at Dierkes Lake over the Memorial Day weekend. The incident has prompted local officials to remind families of the critical importance of water safety, especially during holiday gatherings.

Community Response and Safety Measures

Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson reported that emergency services were alerted shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, when the young boy went underwater and did not resurface. Responding swiftly, the Twin Falls Police Department, sheriff’s office, fire crews, paramedics, and the county dive team arrived at the scene. Divers successfully located the child approximately six minutes after entering the water.

Sheriff Johnson, who was personally involved in the response, expressed deep condolences to the family and all those affected by the tragedy. He highlighted the emotional impact on first responders, witnesses, and the victim’s friends and family. “Our condolences are with the family, the other young folks that were with this young man, and all of the people that tried to help out before we could get divers in the water,” Johnson stated.

Emphasizing Water Safety

Dierkes Lake is a favored spot for families and swimmers, particularly during holiday weekends. In light of this incident, Sheriff Johnson is urging parents and guardians to exercise increased caution around water bodies, advocating for the use of life jackets for children, regardless of their swimming abilities. “Even if they’re good swimmers and they’re young, get a life jacket on them,” he advised. “Our children are precious to everybody, and anything we can do to protect them.”

Officials hope that this tragedy serves as a poignant reminder for families across southern Idaho to prioritize water safety as Memorial Day weekend activities continue. The community’s collective grief underscores the need for vigilance and precaution to prevent future incidents.
