Tuscaloosa Named No. 2 College Sports Town in USA

Tuscaloosa has been recognized as the nation’s No. 2 best college‑sports town in the 2026 USA TODAY Sports Readers’ Choice Awards, according to a Wednesday announcement from the city’s tourism bureau, Visit Tuscaloosa. The ranking places the Druid City ahead of every other SEC community on the Top 10 list, with only Missoula, home of the University of Montana, ranking higher.

“College sports are woven into the fabric of Tuscaloosa, and we are incredibly proud to see our community recognized this way,” said Kelsey Rush, president and CEO of Visit Tuscaloosa. “Game days bring an unmatched energy to our community and are a bucket‑list experience for sports lovers, but what makes Tuscaloosa even more special is everything visitors can experience beyond the stadium.”

How the award was decided

The Readers’ Choice Awards began with an expert panel that selected 20 destinations across the country that best capture the energy, traditions, and atmosphere of college athletics. Those finalists were then opened to a public vote, allowing fans to cast one vote per day until the voting period closed in early August.

Local events that complement the honor

The accolade arrives as Tuscaloosa’s fall calendar fills with festivals and cultural events that showcase the city’s blend of tradition and hospitality. From October 1‑3, the Moundville Native American Festival will feature artisans, traditional dances, storytelling, and music. The same weekend, Tuscaloosa Oktoberfest returns to Government Plaza with a 5K race, German food, and family‑friendly festivities.

Mid‑October brings the 55th Kentuck Festival of the Arts (Oct. 17‑18) at Snow Hinton Park, drawing hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors. Halloween celebrations include Tannehill State Park’s Fairyland (Oct. 31) with lantern‑lit trails and trick‑or‑treating, and Lake Lurleen State Park’s Camp Fear event, offering hayrides and decorated campsites.

Music lovers can look forward to several concerts scheduled at the Mercedes‑Benz Amphitheater throughout the season, adding another layer of entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

Why the ranking matters for families and businesses

For families, the recognition underscores the city’s ability to provide a vibrant, safe environment where sports, culture, and community activities intersect. For local businesses, the national spotlight is expected to boost tourism revenue, supporting hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments that thrive on game‑day crowds and festival attendees.

Visit Tuscaloosa emphasized that the city’s “balanced blend of hospitality, excitement and authenticity” makes each visit meaningful and memorable, reinforcing the community’s reputation as a premier destination for college‑sports enthusiasts and families seeking wholesome recreation.

As the city prepares for the upcoming fall season, officials hope the award will further cement Tuscaloosa’s standing as a top‑tier college‑sports town and encourage continued investment in events that celebrate both athletic passion and cultural heritage.
