Tuscaloosa County High Fires Head Coach Cris Bell After 0-5 Start

Tuscaloosa County High School confirmed on Tuesday that head football coach Cris Bell has been terminated. The decision came shortly after the Wildcats suffered a 62-7 defeat at Thompson, a loss that left the team winless in its first five games of the 2026 season.

Administration cites difficult decision

School officials told parents that the move was “very difficult” but necessary to reset the football program’s leadership. “We appreciate Coach Bell’s efforts, but the program needs a new direction to better serve our student‑athletes and community,” a spokesperson said.

Interim coach named

Assistant coach Matthew Carden has been appointed interim head coach. Carden, who has been with the Wildcats for several years, will guide the team as they prepare for their next home game on October 2 against Vestavia Hills.

The Wildcats compete in Class 6A, Region 3, and have struggled defensively and offensively in each of their five contests this season. The upcoming matchup offers a chance for the team to demonstrate improvement under new leadership.

Community reaction

Parents and local supporters expressed disappointment over the abrupt change but also voiced optimism that a fresh perspective could revive the program. “We want what’s best for our kids and the school,” one parent said. “If a new coach can bring stability and success, we support that decision.”

Local alumni and former players have also weighed in, emphasizing the importance of strong mentorship and character development for high‑school athletes. Many highlighted the role of football in fostering teamwork, discipline, and community pride.

Looking ahead

As the Wildcats regroup, the focus will be on rebuilding fundamentals, improving conditioning, and restoring confidence on both sides of the ball. Coach Carden indicated that the staff will prioritize fundamentals and a positive locker‑room culture.

Fans are encouraged to attend the October 2 home game at the school’s stadium to show support for the team during this transition period. Ticket information and game details are available on the Tuscaloosa County High School athletics website.

Background on the season

Since the season opened, the Wildcats have been dominated in each contest, conceding an average of 45 points per game while scoring just seven. The loss to Thompson was the most lopsided, prompting the administration to act swiftly.

While the coaching change is a significant development, the school remains committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for all student‑athletes and will continue to emphasize academic achievement alongside athletic pursuits.
