Atlanta’s So So Fed Pop‑Up Serves Lao‑Chinese Flavors Two Nights a Week

Atlanta’s food scene continues to innovate with So So Fed, a Lao‑Chinese‑American pop‑up that opens only two nights a week—Sunday and Monday—inside the kitchen of Japanese restaurant OK YAKI. Chef Molli Voraotsady and her crew take over the space after OK YAKI closes, turning a modest kitchen into a bustling dining room for hungry locals.

From Home Kitchen to Weekly Sprint

Voraotsady, an Atlanta native with a Hong Kong mother and a Lao father, began cooking for friends at home before expanding to neighbors via flyers and Instagram. A friend’s invitation to try a pop‑up at a Poncey‑Highland restaurant sparked the idea, even though she had never worked in a professional kitchen. The result is a menu that changes weekly, reflecting her family heritage and personal culinary experiments.

Operating on the Fly

Because So So Fed has no permanent pantry, the team must source all ingredients fresh each week. Voraotsady’s husband, Ash Jones, handles the grocery run, loading bulk items—ground pork, beef, Thai basil, papayas—into a 2003 Toyota 4Runner before returning home to pack a white‑board‑filled SUV with steamers, rice cookers, heat lamps and even a folding table for a rice station. The crew then transforms the OK YAKI space into So So Fed, setting up stations by 12:45 p.m. and serving diners for the next four hours.

Community Support and Loyal Regulars

Lines often form before opening, with two dozen people waiting at 4:54 p.m. on a typical Sunday. Regulars such as Dhruv Khanna and Simran Singh say they visit “every week we can,” bringing out‑of‑town family members who label the spot a “must‑do.” Others, like Lynnea Zhang, appreciate the intentional community feel, noting that So So Fed offers something distinct from the countless new restaurants that open and close in Atlanta.

Menu Highlights

The ever‑changing menu showcases dishes like a farmer’s‑market salad with Lao‑style egg‑yolk dressing, papaya salad, yellowtail crudo with yuzu coconut jeow, vegetable and beef red curries, and the signature siu mai dumplings. A Southern‑inspired fried chicken plate with jeow som gravy and grilled lemon adds an Atlanta twist, while a simple burger—lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, fries and ketchup—appears on special occasions.

Challenges and Rewards

Running a pop‑up is demanding. Voraotsady describes the service as “one of our hardest,” recalling moments when she ran out of food within an hour despite a full house. Yet the pressure fuels a “fun‑awful rush” that keeps her returning. Line cooks often clock 30 hours in a single two‑day workweek, balancing kitchen duties with personal pursuits such as drumming.

Why Pop‑Ups Matter in Atlanta

Since the pandemic, pop‑ups have become a practical way for chefs to test concepts without the financial burden of a long‑term lease. They serve as proof‑of‑concept venues, allowing entrepreneurs to build an audience and attract investors. So So Fed exemplifies this model, turning a modest weekly sprint into a beloved community staple while honoring the culinary legacy of Voraotsady’s grandmother, the best Lao cook she knew.

As Atlanta continues to serve as a laboratory for innovative dining, So So Fed’s success underscores the city’s appetite for authentic, family‑rooted flavors delivered with entrepreneurial spirit.
