Pueblo High School in Tucson is undergoing a culture and climate review after staff members raised concerns about the school’s leadership and work environment. The review was initiated last spring when staff members reached out to the Tucson Unified School District’s Governing Board.
Staff Concerns
More than a dozen staff members, including teachers and former students, spoke out about their experiences at Pueblo High School during a recent board meeting. They described a culture of sexism, preferential treatment, and leadership failure under Principal Frank Rosthenhausler. Christabel Saldana-Buckner, a math teacher, shared an anecdote about being publicly shamed and threatened by Rosthenhausler after sharing her ideas.
Rosthenhausler, who has been principal since 2019, said he would wait for the results of the review and listen to concerns. The district says the review will take as long as necessary and will involve mediation.
Survey Results
A survey conducted by staff members last spring found that about 70% of respondents scored Rosthenhausler as unsatisfactory or basic in his leadership. The survey also showed dissatisfaction with Rosthenhausler’s communication practices, treatment of staff and students, and overall work environment.
Tucson Unified School District Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo acknowledged that the review process is extensive and will take time. He said the district wants to ensure that employee relations get a full, objective assessment.
