Trust for Public Land and Maryland DNR add 61 acres to Gunpowder Falls State Park

Two major land‑conservation projects have been finalized in Maryland, bringing new protected acreage to both northern Baltimore County and Charles County. The effort was led by the nonprofit Trust for Public Land in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

61‑acre expansion of Gunpowder Falls State Park

The centerpiece of the work is a 61‑acre parcel that now joins Gunpowder Falls State Park. Senior Project Manager Kent Whitehead of the Trust for Public Land explained that the newly acquired land runs directly along the Gunpowder Falls River and borders the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, a popular multi‑use path for hikers, cyclists and equestrians.

By adding this stretch, the park gains additional river frontage, new trail connections, and increased habitat protection for local wildlife. The acquisition also helps preserve water quality in the Gunpowder River, a key resource for downstream communities.

Conservation project in Charles County

In Charles County, the Trust for Public Land and DNR completed a separate conservation effort that safeguards a different tract of land. While the specific size of the Charles County parcel was not disclosed in the source, the project follows the same goal of protecting natural resources, maintaining open space, and providing future recreational opportunities for residents.

Both projects were funded through a combination of public and private sources, reflecting a collaborative approach to land stewardship that aligns with Maryland’s broader environmental goals.

Impact on local families and communities

These additions to Maryland’s park system offer families new outdoor venues for recreation, education, and spiritual renewal. The expanded trail network encourages healthy, active lifestyles and provides a safe environment for children and seniors alike to enjoy nature.

Local faith‑based groups have expressed support for the projects, noting that preserving God‑created landscapes aligns with the community’s shared values of stewardship and gratitude for the natural world.

Looking ahead

The Trust for Public Land and the Maryland DNR say they will continue to identify and protect valuable lands throughout the state. Future acquisitions are expected to focus on connecting existing green corridors, enhancing water‑resource protection, and expanding public access to outdoor spaces.

For residents of Baltimore and Charles counties, the new parkland represents a tangible benefit of cooperative conservation—one that safeguards the environment while enriching the quality of life for families across the region.
