As the United States celebrates its 250th year, Washington, D.C. is undergoing significant changes under President Donald Trump’s leadership. Since returning to office 17 months ago, Trump has implemented various projects and policies that have altered the city’s landscape.
National Guard Deployment
The city’s main transit hubs, Union Station and Metro Center, now have an indefinite deployment of armed National Guard troops. This deployment, which began in August 2025, is part of Trump’s effort to fight crime in the city.
Government Efficiency and Budget Cuts
The Trump administration has also made significant changes to the federal government, including the elimination of 90% of foreign aid contracts, which has resulted in a $60 billion cut in funding. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was one of the first agencies to be targeted, with tens of thousands of workers losing their jobs.
Trump’s Image and Legacy
Banners bearing Trump’s image have been displayed on several government buildings, including the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Justice Department. The Reflecting Pool, a historic site near the Lincoln Memorial, has been repainted in a color Trump has dubbed ‘American flag blue.’ Additionally, a proposed 20-story, gold-adorned triumphal arch is planned to be built near the Lincoln Memorial.
Changes to Iconic Landmarks
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts was temporarily renamed the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center, although a court decision later stripped Trump’s name from the building. The White House has also undergone significant changes, including the construction of a new ballroom and the paving over of the Rose Garden.
Black Lives Matter Plaza
The area formerly known as Black Lives Matter Plaza has been removed, and the site is no longer a hub for political activism. The decision to remove the plaza was made in response to threats from Congress to hold the city’s funding.
