Trump rallies Gastonia voters, warns of rising crime under Democratic leadership

President Donald Trump addressed a packed crowd in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Wednesday, using a recent homicide case to underscore his message that Democratic officials have weakened public safety. Speaking on behalf of Republican Senate hopeful Michael Whatley, Trump warned that the state’s crime rate is climbing and that voters must act to protect their families.

Trump cites recent murder to illustrate policy failures

During the rally, Trump referenced the August 2025 killing of a Ukrainian refugee on a Charlotte commuter train. He identified the accused, Decarlos Brown Jr., as a Black man with a long criminal record who was out on pre‑trial release. “He should have been locked up for many, many years,” Trump said, adding that North Carolina was once “apple pie” but now ranks among the most violent states.

Trump compared the case to the infamous 1988 “Willie Horton” ad, noting that the ad helped then‑president George H.W. Bush gain a decisive lead. “Willie Horton was a bad guy, really bad guy,” Trump declared, arguing that the same pattern of lenient criminal‑justice policies is repeating today.

RNC and local Republicans back the message

Republican National Committee press secretary Natalie Baldassarre echoed Trump’s claims, stating that Democratic leaders have “emptied prisons and released thousands of violent criminals,” and that those policies will have “deadly consequences” in November’s election.

Local supporters displayed a mosaic of mugshots, predominantly of Black individuals, to illustrate what they described as a surge in dangerous releases. While state corrections officials clarified that Brown was not released early by former Governor Roy Cooper, the rally emphasized the perceived link between Democratic governance and public‑safety concerns.

Political analysts weigh in

Political scientists cited in the report noted that invoking historic ads can energize a base, though they cautioned that the strategy may also polarize voters. Emory University scholar Andra Gillespie said the ad’s racial undertones were not sufficiently condemned at the time, but its impact on voter sentiment was undeniable.

Despite criticism from Democratic strategists, Trump and Whatley remain confident that highlighting crime will resonate with swing voters ahead of the midterm elections.
