A federal judge has ruled that President Donald Trump must pay $5.8 million to E. Jean Carroll, a writer who accused him of sexual abuse and defamation. The payment, which has been held in escrow since a jury found in favor of Carroll, will be released after the U.S. Supreme Court recently allowed the 2023 civil verdict to stand.
Background of the Case
The jury found that Trump had attacked Carroll in 1996 in a luxury Manhattan department store and later defamed her after she publicly described the incident in a 2019 memoir. Trump has denied the allegations, calling them false and stating that Carroll was not his type.
Trump’s lawyers have announced that they will appeal the decision, accusing his political opponents of using the legal system against him. They are seeking to block the payment while they appeal the case to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
This case is not the only one involving Trump and Carroll. Trump is also appealing an $83 million defamation compensation granted to Carroll by a separate Manhattan jury after a 2024 trial.
