President Donald Trump met with Senate Republicans on Wednesday to discuss his war in Iran and a voting bill. The meeting came after Trump berated GOP senators for opposing his war in Iran. Trump had called the Republicans “losers” for voting against his war and had called Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy a “lunatic”.
War Powers Resolution
The Senate voted on a war powers resolution, which was rejected 47-50-1. The measure was largely symbolic and did not carry the full force of law. Cassidy, who had voted with Democrats on a similar measure the day before, switched his vote after receiving a personal briefing on the war from Vice President JD Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican who has repeatedly voted with Democrats to halt the war, voted present this time “to give the President more space and leverage to negotiate a lasting peace,” he said. The Senate then left town for a two-week recess.
Voting Bill
Trump has pressed Republicans for months to kill the Senate filibuster and focus on his proof-of-citizenship voting bill. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has repeatedly told Trump that the bill does not have enough votes to pass.
