The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the president to levy tariffs. Additionally, the Court ruled against an executive order issued by Trump that aimed to oppose birthright citizenship. The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that all persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.

Trump’s executive order declared that no department or agency of the United States government should issue documents recognizing United States citizenship to persons whose mother was unlawfully present in the United States and whose father was not a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident at the time of birth. The order also applied to persons whose mother’s presence in the United States was lawful but temporary, and whose father was not a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident at the time of birth.
