President Donald Trump has taken to Truth Social to urge Congress to act swiftly on a new legislative proposal aimed at addressing what he describes as a financial and structural crisis in collegiate athletics. Trump warns that without intervention, major university athletic programs could face bankruptcy, with women’s sports and the U.S. Olympic pipeline being particularly vulnerable.
Financial Crisis in College Sports
In his statement, Trump characterized the current state of college sports as chaotic, likening it to professional sports but without any rules. He noted that university presidents, conference commissioners, student-athletes, coaches, and athletic directors have expressed concerns about the situation, describing it as a ‘freight train that can’t be stopped.’ According to Trump, schools are losing hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
Legislative Efforts
The statement comes as Senators Ted Cruz, Eric Schmitt, Maria Cantwell, and Chris Coons introduce the Protect College Sports Act. Trump expressed gratitude for their efforts, emphasizing that the proposed law addresses urgent issues facing universities and student-athletes. He called it perhaps ‘the last chance to save College Sports, and Colleges themselves, before it’s too late.’
Trump also acknowledged the support of House Speaker Mike Johnson and Leader Steve Scalise in this legislative effort. He urged both chambers of Congress to collaborate on a bipartisan bill for him to sign this summer, stating, ‘WE HAVE TO SAVE COLLEGE SPORTS!’
Previously, the administration held a roundtable discussion with sports executives, student-athletes, and political leaders to address these issues. While Trump had signed an executive order targeting the problem, he maintains that a legislative solution is the most stable path forward.
