Jewish American Basketball Player Builds Community Through Sport

Jared Armstrong, a Jewish American professional basketball player, has turned his passion for the sport into a mission to unite communities and inspire future generations. Despite an injury that prevented him from playing Division I basketball, Armstrong has found success playing professionally in Israel, where he also gained citizenship due to his Jewish heritage.

Building Bridges with Basketball

Armstrong’s efforts extend beyond the court as he builds basketball courts in Israel and in Jewish communities in his hometown of Philadelphia. His goal is to be remembered as more than just a basketball player, focusing on creating opportunities for youth who lack outlets for their energy and ambitions.

“I always had the passion that basketball is going to stop one day. What are you going to do after your career?” Armstrong shared. He aims to build a business while playing, ensuring a stable future post-basketball.

Philanthropy and Community Engagement

The events of October 7 motivated Armstrong to further support his communities. He noticed that many children lacked activities and educational opportunities, which inspired him to organize basketball clinics. “They were hungry for it,” Armstrong noted, emphasizing the importance of giving back to the places that shaped his career.

Armstrong, who identifies more with action-based values than religious practices, believes in the power of basketball to teach morals, values, and principles. He hopes to show children what is possible with “a ball and a dream.”

JAB Classic: A Tournament with a Purpose

In addition to his community work, Armstrong is organizing the JAB Classic, a million-dollar basketball tournament set for August. The event will feature former NBA players and top international professionals, aiming to combat hate and promote unity through sport.

“Hate is rising, and I think sport is a beautiful way to not only amplify the message but also show that unity is possible,” Armstrong explained. The tournament also provides inner-city kids the chance to see their favorite players, fostering community engagement and inspiration.

Reflecting on his journey, Armstrong credits basketball for his achievements and believes it can “save the world.” He highlights the sport’s accessibility and the life skills it imparts, such as communication and teamwork, which are crucial both on and off the court.
