Trump backs Graham as South Carolina Senate race tightens, Rep. Norman refuses to campaign

South Carolina voters are hearing a sharp intra‑party clash as the Trump administration steps in to support Sen. Darline Graham, the appointed successor to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. President Trump held a rally in Clemson last week, urging voters to back Graham and promising they would look back on the election as one of the “greatest votes” they ever made.

Norman rejects Trump‑backed candidate

Rep. Ralph Norman, R‑SC, who lost to Graham in the Republican Senate primary runoff, told Fox News Digital via text that he will not campaign with or for her, even if asked. “The voters in S.C. are not buying the argument that everyone has to ‘settle’ for a candidate that has been propped up by special interest groups and a Republican president spending millions of dollars spreading false narratives about why Darline Graham is qualified,” Norman wrote in all caps.

Norman added that the general‑election campaign “is about attempts to ‘force’ a candidate on the voters of S.C. and regardless of the outcome, it didn’t have to be this way as the great people living in South Carolina deserve ‘better!!’” He also said he would refuse any request from Graham’s campaign manager to appear at a joint event.

Other Republicans weigh in

House colleague Rep. Russell Fry, also a primary loser, publicly urged Norman to step into the arena, noting his long record carrying the conservative banner. Meanwhile, Republican National Committee spokeswoman Emma Hall told reporters that “Republicans are unified on beating Annie Andrews” and framed the race as a fight against “Democrats’ socialism,” adding that President Trump supports Graham.

Trump’s endorsement and campaign spending

At the Clemson rally, President Trump said, “You must vote for Darline and Republicans, and just — you’re going to be happy. I tell you, you’re going to look back years from now. You’ll say it was truly one of the greatest votes you ever made. High‑quality person, and she’s going to be great.” The White House pointed reporters to this statement when asked for comment.

In addition to the presidential rally, the Senate Leadership Fund – a political action committee closely aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune – pledged $5 million in ad spending in South Carolina earlier this month. The influx of national‑level support has shifted the Cook Political Report’s rating from “Likely Republican” to “Lean Republican,” indicating a more competitive contest than previously expected.

Local political dynamics

Graham, who was appointed to replace her brother, now faces former state Rep. Annie Andrews, a Democrat, in the November general election. Two former South Carolina governors – Republican David Beasley and Democrat Jim Hodges – have reportedly thrown their weight behind Andrews, adding to the high‑stakes atmosphere.

Norman’s son, Warren Norman, published an op‑ed in FITS News stating he is leaning toward Andrews and may even vote for a Democrat for the first time. He expressed concern that there is “no true conservative to vote for in this election,” highlighting the depth of the intra‑party divide.

What voters should know

South Carolina voters will head to the polls in the final week of President Trump’s term, deciding which party will control the Senate for the next two years. The race now features a President‑backed incumbent, a former Republican congressman refusing to endorse her, and a high‑profile Democratic challenger supported by former governors.

Election forecasters continue to monitor fundraising, advertising, and polling trends as the contest tightens. Voters are encouraged to review the candidates’ platforms, consider the endorsements, and cast their ballots in accordance with their values and the Constitution.
