President Donald Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to three veterans on Thursday, recognizing their heroic actions in Vietnam and Afghanistan. The ceremony honored Marine Corps Maj. James Capers Jr., Army Maj. Nicholas Dockery, and the late Marine Corps Col. John W. Ripley, who received the award posthumously.
Heroic Actions
Maj. Capers, 88, was recognized for his selfless rescue of fellow Marines after they were ambushed in Vietnam in 1967. Despite being wounded, Capers called in air support and ensured the safety of his team. Maj. Dockery was honored for his bravery in Afghanistan in 2012, where he rescued wounded soldiers and coordinated a successful rescue mission. Col. Ripley was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic effort to halt the advance of North Vietnamese forces by blowing up a crucial bridge in 1972.
President Trump praised the three veterans, saying, ‘These are great men, great people. We thank you and we will never, ever forget you.’ The ceremony was attended by the families of the honorees, including Col. Ripley’s three sons.
