A proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in a traffic circle between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery could take 20 hours a day for 2-3 years to construct, according to documents. The arch, which would be located in the middle of Memorial Circle, would dwarf the 99-foot Lincoln Memorial and be roughly 30 feet taller than the Plaza de la República in Mexico City.
Construction Impact
Vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic on the Arlington Memorial Bridge and Arlington Boulevard would be affected, with westbound traffic reduced from three lanes to two on the bridge. The National Park Service documents state that the 250-foot height is intended to celebrate 250 years of American independence.
The arch would be built from concrete and finished with granite, unlike many of D.C.’s monuments, which are constructed in natural stone such as marble and limestone. The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting a full aeronautical study in coordination with the National Park Service, which is listed as the sponsor of the plan.
