Trump administration resumes deportations to Haiti amid local concerns

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent the first deportation flight to Haiti on Thursday, marking the first such flight since the Biden‑Trump administration revoked Temporary Protected Status for roughly 350,000 Haitian nationals. The charter delivered 161 passengers to Cap‑Haitien, a historic city on Haiti’s northern coast.

Local officials warn of capacity limits

Cap‑Haitien’s mayor‑former, Angie Bell, and local health administrators said the city is already strained. Hospital Fort Saint Michel is at full capacity, and municipal services such as trash collection are overwhelmed. “Cap‑Haitien alone can’t receive more people,” said mechanic Demonstène Reynold, noting that the city already hosts displaced residents from other parts of Haiti.

Federal justification and criticism

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin posted on X that the deportations were a “great day to deport illegal aliens.” He defended the decision by asserting that Haiti is safe for returnees, despite a State Department “do not travel” advisory and a Federal Aviation Administration ban on U.S. commercial flights to the country. Critics argue the move endangers vulnerable migrants, especially given Haiti’s ongoing gang‑related kidnapping crisis.

Impact on deportees

According to Haiti’s National Migration Office, many of the arrivals were unfamiliar with the country. One passenger, born in the Dominican Republic to Haitian parents and raised in the United States, reportedly knew nothing about Haiti. The government and aid agencies typically provide food, a modest cash stipend, temporary lodging, and assistance locating family members, but many deportees remain uncertain about their next steps.

Broader implications

The flight follows a court‑ordered removal of TPS protections, a policy shift that could affect hundreds of thousands of Haitian migrants across the United States. Immigrant‑rights groups have raised concerns about the humanitarian impact, while immigration‑restriction advocates argue that the policy is necessary for border security.

As the situation unfolds, both Haitian authorities and U.S. officials face pressure to balance immigration enforcement with the practical realities of resettlement in a city already grappling with limited resources.
