Man bitten by bear while camping near Red River, NM

New Mexico wildlife officials responded Friday morning to a bear bite incident near the Red River. The victim, a man camping in the area, suffered injuries that were classified as non‑life‑threatening. Officers from the Department of Wildlife Conservation are conducting an active investigation and will release further details as they become available.

What happened

According to the department, the man was bitten while setting up his campsite. The bear’s behavior suggests it was attracted to items in the camping area, a common risk in bear country when food, toiletries, or scented products are not properly stored.

Safety guidelines for campers

Officials emphasized that encounters with bears can occur unexpectedly, and knowing how to react is critical for public safety. Campers are urged to follow these proven safety measures:

  • Store fragrant items securely. Toothpaste, insect repellent, soap, candy bars, and other scented products can draw bears. Keep them away from sleeping areas.
  • Separate cooking and sleeping zones. Place cooking sites at least 100 yards from where you sleep to reduce odor draw.
  • Change clothes after cooking. Wear fresh clothing before heading to bed to avoid lingering food smells.
  • Hang food and waste properly. Suspend human food, pet food, and garbage from a tree at least 10 feet off the ground and four feet away from trunks or branches.

How to respond if you see a bear

If a bear appears, officials advise staying calm and leaving the area without sudden movements. Back away slowly while keeping your eyes on the animal; running can trigger a chase response. Make yourself look larger by raising your arms, opening a jacket, and standing tall. Never approach a bear, especially if cubs are present, as mothers will defend them aggressively.

In the rare event a bear becomes aggressive or charges, do not play dead. Use a large stick, a backpack, a hat, a jacket, or any available object to defend yourself. Throw rocks or use whatever is at hand to deter the animal.

Resources

For additional bear‑safety guidelines and resources on how to protect yourself while recreating in bear country, visit the New Mexico Department of Wildlife Conservation website at wildlife.dgf.nm.gov. The agency also offers educational materials and can answer specific questions about local wildlife behavior.

Community impact

While the incident resulted in only minor injuries, it serves as a reminder to the outdoor community that proper preparation and respect for wildlife are essential. Local camping groups and outdoor clubs are encouraged to share these safety tips with members and to promote responsible recreation in New Mexico’s wilderness areas.
