The Trump administration has signed a short-term peace deal with Iran, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade for 60 days as nuclear talks continue. The deal, which was electronically signed on Monday, is expected to be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday.
Details of the Deal
The US and Iran have agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil shipments, and Iran is supposed to demine the waterway within the next 30 days. The deal also includes the lifting of the US naval blockade, which has been in place since the conflict began 107 days ago.
President Trump announced the deal on social media, stating that ships are starting to move through the Strait of Hormuz and that the Southern ‘Highway’ is safe and secure. However, some lawmakers have expressed caution, with Senator Lindsey Graham stating that he is ‘pleased’ to hear of the ceasefire deal but will be ‘watching closely’ to ensure that Iran’s view of the agreement aligns with that of the American negotiating team.
Reaction from Lawmakers
Lawmakers have had mixed reactions to the deal, with some Republicans expressing cautious optimism and Democrats criticizing the conflict and the terms of the deal. Senator Chris Murphey accused the president of ‘humiliating America’ and pledged to ‘hold Trump accountable’ once the conflict finally ends.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told Congress in May that the US military has ‘degraded almost completely [Iran’s] defense industrial base’ and destroyed Iran’s navy, as well as three aircraft carriers and 11 submarines. However, Iran’s nuclear program remains operational, and lawmakers have expressed concerns about the lack of concessions from Iran.
The conflict has come at a high cost, with 14 US servicemembers killed and over $30 billion spent since the initial US-Israeli joint strikes on Iran 107 days ago. The costs of jet fuel, crude oil, and fertilizer have also skyrocketed, resulting in more expensive plane tickets, higher distribution costs for consumer goods, and US gas prices hitting a four-year high.
