The Trump administration has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to suspend most vehicle stops after two deadly shootings within a week. The decision came after an ICE officer shot and killed a Colombian driver in Maine and a week after another officer shot and killed a motorist in Houston.
Protests in Maine
Hundreds of people in Maine protested over the ICE officer’s fatal shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian national. The shooting sparked outrage among the community, with many calling for an investigation into the incident.
According to reports, the ICE officer shot and killed Durán Guerrero while attempting to stop a car driven by someone who came from a home being watched by ICE. The officer claimed the driver attempted to flee and the officer fired his weapon.
However, the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear, and an investigation is ongoing. The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! said Durán Guerrero was authorized to work in the U.S.
The Trump administration’s enforcement efforts have been widely condemned, with many criticizing the use of deadly force by ICE officers. The shooting in Maine marked at least the ninth time ICE has used deadly force since Trump began his immigration crackdown.
