Truck crash and fire kills driver on James Avenue in Hancock County

Hancock County, Iowa – A tragic traffic accident claimed the life of a local driver on Monday morning. The Iowa State Patrol reported that 59‑year‑old Dennis Doocy was traveling north on James Avenue when his truck veered off the roadway.

According to officials, the vehicle crossed the shoulder, broke through a fence, and collided with a tree. The impact caused a fuel leak that quickly ignited, turning the scene into a blaze. First‑responders arrived promptly, but Doocy was found deceased at the site of the fire.

Investigation underway

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Patrol investigators are examining vehicle condition, road surface, weather conditions, and any potential driver impairment. No other vehicles or individuals were reported to be involved, and there were no injuries beyond the fatality.

Local authorities have reminded residents of the importance of safe driving practices, especially on rural routes where fences and trees line the roadways. “We urge motorists to stay alert, maintain a safe speed, and keep a proper distance from the vehicle ahead,” a spokesperson for the Iowa State Patrol said.

Community response

Friends and family of the deceased have expressed grief over the loss. A small gathering is planned at the local church later this week to honor Doocy’s memory and to offer support to his loved ones.

The incident also sparked a brief discussion among county officials about road safety improvements on James Avenue. While no immediate changes have been announced, the county commissioners have indicated they will review the accident report once the investigation is complete.

Safety reminders for drivers

In light of this tragedy, the Iowa Department of Transportation recommends the following precautions for drivers on rural highways:

  • Reduce speed in areas with limited visibility or where wildlife may cross.
  • Maintain a safe following distance to allow ample reaction time.
  • Ensure vehicle maintenance, especially brakes and tires, is up to date.
  • Avoid distractions such as mobile devices while driving.

Residents are encouraged to report any hazardous road conditions, such as damaged fences or overgrown vegetation, to the county road department.

The Iowa State Patrol will release further details as the investigation progresses.
