Transportation Secretary Announces Federal Funding for Port Tampa Bay and New St. Petersburg‑Tampa Ferry

Federal officials came to Tampa on Monday to highlight two major investments that will affect the local maritime and transit sectors. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced a $1 million award to Gulf Marine Repair Corporation, a Tampa‑based ship‑repair firm located on the Ybor Ship Channel, and a $16.5 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) to construct a new 249‑passenger ferry.

Ship‑yard grant supports workforce and infrastructure

The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration will provide Gulf Marine Repair with equipment for its training center, wheel loaders and berth upgrades. The company specializes in repairing, converting and modifying commercial vessels, tugs, barges, dredges, small ships and harbor tugs. Secretary Duffy said the investment reflects a broader effort to revitalize American shipbuilding, noting that a strong commercial‑vessel sector also eases the production of military ships.

Earlier this month, the Maritime Administration announced $35.1 million for critical infrastructure improvements and workforce development at 45 shipyards across 24 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Duffy emphasized that such “holistic” approaches require coordination among multiple government agencies.

New ferry to connect St. Petersburg and Tampa

In a separate announcement, the Federal Transit Administration approved $16.5 million for PSTA to build a brand‑new ferry that will join the two vessels already in service—Bay Breeze and Bay Clipper. The new boat will be part of the upcoming Tampa Bay Ferry service, which aims to provide a reliable, high‑capacity link between downtown St. Petersburg and downtown Tampa. PSTA interim communications manager Amanda Boisen said the design and construction will take several years, but the investment secures the long‑term viability of the service.

Boisen added that an official PSTA statement is expected later this week, confirming details of the vessel’s specifications and timeline.

Port Tampa Bay’s strategic role

Port Tampa Bay moves more than 30 million tons of cargo annually and serves as a hub for ship repair and cruise operations. Maritime Administration administrator Stephen Carmel highlighted the port’s importance, noting that about 9.5 million barrels of petroleum products passed through the facility in 2025, underscoring its contribution to both maritime and energy dominance.

Carmel cited the port’s location as a “really unique attribute,” making it ideal for feeder services that connect regional ports to major hubs in the Caribbean and Asia. He also pointed to the region’s historic shipbuilding legacy, saying the existing “bones” make expansion straightforward.

Local leadership welcomes the funding

Port Tampa Bay President and CEO Paul Anderson praised the announcements, stating that the area has the shipyard resources, workforce, and platform needed to grow the port’s contribution to national maritime strength. He described the federal support as a vote of confidence in Florida’s business climate.

Secretary Duffy reiterated that Florida is “a great place to do business,” and stressed the importance of investing where local leaders actively seek development and workforce training.

What the investments mean for the community

The ferry project promises to improve daily commutes, reduce roadway congestion and provide a scenic alternative for residents and tourists. Meanwhile, the ship‑yard grant is expected to create skilled‑trade jobs and enhance the region’s capacity to service commercial vessels, reinforcing Tampa’s role in the national supply chain.

Both initiatives illustrate how federal resources can be directed toward local projects that support economic growth, job creation and the efficient movement of people and goods.
