Veteran Lubbock Fire Rescue firefighter Kasey Davis, who has served the department for 15½ years, recently took on the additional responsibility of fire chief for his hometown of Ropesville. In a profile for Lubbock Lights, Davis explained that a Winston Churchill quote—“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”—captures the spirit of his career and personal life.
Career and service
Davis entered the fire service after working in residential and commercial electronics construction. He says he was drawn to the profession because he wanted a job that let him help people directly. Though he grew up on a farm and had no prior fire experience, he joined Station 14 and was encouraged by the camaraderie and dedication of his fellow firefighters.
During his tenure with Lubbock Fire Rescue, Davis has taken on multiple instructional roles, including medical, fire, and scuba training. He also serves as a member of the department’s Honor Guard, a group that pays tribute to fallen firefighters. In August of last year, he was appointed fire chief of Ropesville after the town’s fire department was re‑established following a 2011 shutdown.
Family, faith, and coping with stress
Davis, a graduate of Three Way High School in Maple, is married and the father of three boys. He credits his family and his Christian faith for providing stability amid the demands of emergency work. To manage stressful situations, Davis breaks problems down step‑by‑step, relies on counseling, and leans on the support of his spouse and children.
He also practices jujitsu, enjoys fishing and hiking, and works as a handyman on home projects. Outside of his official duties, Davis volunteers as a substitute teacher and conducts CPR training classes for local schools.
Community involvement
Beyond the firehouse, Davis is active in public education, especially with youth, and participates in community events that promote safety and preparedness. His dual role as a Lubbock firefighter and Ropesville fire chief underscores a commitment to serving both his professional colleagues and the small‑town community where he was raised.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give,” Davis said, noting that the quote reflects his belief that service to others defines a meaningful life.
