Tom Sell and Jon Bonck Secure GOP Nominations for Texas Congressional Seats

In a decisive move for Texas politics, Republicans Tom Sell and Jon Bonck emerged victorious in their respective GOP primary runoffs, setting the stage for their likely election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Both candidates are running in districts that have historically leaned heavily Republican.

West Texas Victory for Tom Sell

Tom Sell, a businessman with deep roots in Lubbock, secured the Republican nomination for Texas’ 19th Congressional District. This district, stretching from Lubbock to Abilene, has been a Republican stronghold, with former President Donald Trump winning by a significant margin in the 2024 election. Sell’s campaign was bolstered by endorsements from prominent GOP leaders, including House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer.

Sell’s opponent, Abraham Enriquez, who emphasized his support for Trump, was backed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. Despite this support, Sell’s connections and endorsements proved decisive. The seat became available following the retirement of Rep. Jodey Arrington, who had served since 2017.

Houston’s Jon Bonck Secures Nomination

In the Houston area, Jon Bonck claimed victory in the 38th Congressional District’s GOP primary runoff. Bonck, who nearly won the primary outright in March, received endorsements from key Republican figures, including Trump, Senator Ted Cruz, and House Speaker Mike Johnson. His campaign focused on conservative values, emphasizing family, faith, and future.

Bonck’s opponent, Shelley deZavallos, was unable to overcome the wave of support for Bonck, who declared victory shortly after polls closed. The seat was open due to Rep. Wesley Hunt’s decision to run for the U.S. Senate.

Both Sell and Bonck will face Democratic challengers in the upcoming November elections. However, given the conservative leanings of their districts, they are favored to win.
