Connecticut Cyclists Ride 100 Miles to Oppose Fossil Fuel Expansion

In a bid to raise awareness about the environmental and health impacts of fossil fuel expansion, a group of cyclists in Connecticut is embarking on a 100-mile journey. The Ride to End Fossil Fuels, organized by the Sierra Club and Sunrise Movement, aims to protest against proposed fossil fuel projects in the state.

Local cyclist Kai Addae, who relies on a bicycle for daily transportation, highlights the direct impact of climate change on personal mobility and health. Addae points out that extreme weather conditions, exacerbated by climate change, make it challenging to commute and access essential services.

The ride will pass through towns affected by proposed projects such as the Brookfield Compressor Station expansion, the Eversource Connecticut River Pipeline, and the Enbridge AGT Pipeline. These projects are seen as potential threats to public health due to increased methane emissions and other pollutants.

Community Events and Advocacy

During the two-day event on May 30 and 31, cyclists will participate in community organizing events in Brookfield, Middletown, and Mansfield. These gatherings aim to support local advocacy efforts against the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure.

Advocates argue that projects like the Brookfield Compressor Station, located near a middle school, pose significant health risks. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, contributes to climate change and can exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, particularly affecting vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.

Connecticut residents are encouraged to join the Ride to End Fossil Fuels events to voice their concerns and push for investment in clean energy alternatives. The cyclists hope to inspire state leaders to prioritize environmental health and sustainable energy solutions over expanding fossil fuel infrastructure.

As climate change continues to impact the state with more extreme weather patterns, the call for action becomes increasingly urgent. The Ride to End Fossil Fuels serves as a reminder of the need for immediate and decisive action to protect the health and well-being of Connecticut’s communities.
