Thunder lose Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace to season‑ending injuries; team stays unbeaten

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams suffered a dislocated left ankle and a fractured fibula, while guard Cason Wallace tore the labrum in his left shoulder during the final minutes of Sunday’s 108‑101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Both injuries will require surgery and will sideline the players indefinitely, according to General Manager Sam Presti, who addressed the media at 5 p.m. after the game.

Williams was fouled on a drive with 1:14 remaining, fell beneath the basket and was quickly attended to by medical staff. The injury prompted an immediate stoppage of play for about five minutes. Wallace left the game earlier with shoulder soreness, and teammate Jaylin Williams exited with a right‑wrist injury.

Thunder teammates expressed their concern on the court. Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander said, “It’s unfortunate his luck so far. But he’s a warrior guy,” while Coach Mark Daigneault called the moment “tough on these guys.” Mayor David Holt posted on social media that the city will keep Williams in its thoughts and prayers, and encouraged fans to wear his jersey for the next game.

Despite the setbacks, Oklahoma City remained unbeaten. On Monday night the short‑handed Thunder defeated the Phoenix Suns 125‑114 at the Paycom Center. Ajay Mitchell, stepping in for Williams, posted a career‑high 30 points; Gilgeous‑Alexander added 26, Jared McCain contributed 18, and Isaiah Hartenstein recorded 15 points with 13 rebounds. Phoenix’s Devin Booker managed only three points on 1‑for‑7 shooting.

The Thunder also dealt with other injuries in the Suns game. Chet Holmgren missed the contest with patellar tendinitis in his right knee, and reserve guard Alex Caruso left the locker room late in the second quarter after spraining his right ankle.

Sportsnaut reported that the injuries to Williams and Wallace are likely season‑ending, creating a “huge void” at the forward position. The outlet noted that Oklahoma City holds seven first‑round picks and 21 second‑rounders over the next several seasons, giving the franchise depth and trade assets. However, the Thunder’s financial situation could limit big‑salary acquisitions. An NBA insider cited by Sportsnaut said a league executive warned that exceeding the second‑tax apron is “not an option for that owner and that market.” ESPN analysis echoed the concern, noting that the only Thunder players earning more than $7.8 million this season—Williams, Gilgeous‑Alexander, Caruso, Holmgren and Hartenstein—are effectively untouchable in a trade.

Given the roster depth and the team’s current performance, analysts suggest the Thunder may pursue smaller‑contract players using existing trade exceptions rather than a blockbuster deal.

What’s next? The Thunder will travel to Dallas on Wednesday night for their next matchup, while the Suns host Denver on Friday.
