U.S. Orthopaedic Partners (USOP) and Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOS) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 22, 2026, for a new ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in Montgomery, Alabama. According to the USOP press release, construction is slated to begin in November, with the facility expected to open in spring 2028. The project follows an Oct. 9 ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court that cleared legal obstacles for the center’s development.
The Montgomery ASC will be designed specifically for orthopedic procedures. It will include four fully equipped operating rooms, space for two additional ORs, two specialized procedure rooms, and robotic‑assisted technology for joint replacements, as detailed by PRNewswire. SOS, which has served Central Alabama since 1996, says the center will give patients greater access to outpatient total‑joint replacements and other orthopedic surgeries, improving convenience and comfort for River Region residents.
“Partnering with USOP provided SOS with the experienced leadership necessary to navigate the complicated process of attaining the Certificate of Need,” said Stephen Samelson, MD, an SOS orthopedic surgeon and chair of USOP’s board of directors, according to the wfmz.com article. Samelson added that without USOP’s expertise, SOS would not have had the resources needed to succeed in today’s healthcare environment.
USOP Co‑CEO Graham Young emphasized the strategic importance of the project, stating, “Our ASC strategy is central to that vision. We are helping physicians expand access to high‑quality, cost‑effective surgical care while building lasting value in their practices.” The announcement also highlighted USOP’s broader growth, noting that the Mid State Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center ASC in Alexandria, La., is expected to open in November 2026, and the SportsMED ASC in Huntsville, Ala., will break ground later this year.
USOP’s existing centers have earned national recognition. Earlier this year, the Bienville Surgery Center on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the North Mississippi Surgery Center in Tupelo were named among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers for Orthopedics & Spine, as reported by PRNewswire.
To support its expanding network, USOP appointed Dean Brown, MBA, CASC, CMPE, as Regional Director of ASC Operations. Brown brings more than two decades of ASC leadership experience, overseeing performance improvement at current centers and guiding new development, including the Montgomery project.
“Our physicians have a lot invested in their practices, and they deserve a partner who is just as committed to their future,” said USOP Co‑CEO Allen Anderson, quoted in the wfmz.com release. “We stayed with SOS through a demanding process, and now we get to help bring this center to life. There is a lot to be excited about as we deliver on our promises and keep momentum moving forward.”
What’s next: Construction on the Montgomery ASC will commence in November 2026. Community members can expect the facility to begin offering outpatient orthopedic surgeries, including joint replacements, by spring 2028, providing a new local option for high‑quality orthopedic care.
