Three teens injured in shooting after high school football game in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh police are actively searching for a gunman who opened fire on a crowd leaving a high school football game on Thursday night. The shooting occurred outside George K. Cupples Stadium in the South Side neighborhood, injuring three teenagers.

Details of the incident

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the altercation began as crowds were exiting the venue after the game between Westinghouse Academy and University Prep. Police said multiple fights broke out on Carson Street, prompting officers from both the Pittsburgh Police Department and the Port Authority to intervene and help disperse the crowds.

“As the game ended, there was a large crowd out here on Carson Street. A couple of fights broke out. We had multiple officers from the city and Port Authority on the scene, helping to just facilitate people safely getting out, breaking up a couple fights, when suddenly, an individual pulled out a firearm and fired multiple rounds,” Police Chief Jason Lando told reporters.

Chief Lando confirmed that two male victims and one female victim, all believed to be teenagers, were taken to a local hospital. All three are reported to be in stable condition.

Police response and investigation

The police department has not released a description of the suspect, but officials emphasized that a substantial police presence was already in place inside and outside the stadium. Metal detectors are installed at the venue, and officers continue to canvass the area for any leads.

“We do not know if the shooter or the victims were inside the stadium before the shooting,” Lando added. The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives are reviewing video footage and speaking with witnesses to identify the individual responsible.

Community impact

The South Side community, which has seen a rise in public‑safety concerns in recent years, expressed shock and sadness over the incident. Local residents and parents of the students emphasized the need for continued vigilance and stronger security measures at public events.

City officials have reiterated their commitment to keeping public gatherings safe, noting that the presence of both city police and Port Authority officers at the game reflects a collaborative approach to public safety.

What comes next

Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Pittsburgh Police Department’s tip line. The department also asked the public to remain calm while the investigation proceeds, assuring residents that all resources are being deployed to bring the suspect to justice.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community cooperation with law‑enforcement efforts, especially in neighborhoods where large crowds gather for school events.
