Three displaced after basement fire erupts at Manchester home

Early Friday morning, firefighters responded to a reported fire at a residence on Salem Road in Manchester, Connecticut. The first alarm sounded at approximately 7:08 a.m., and crews quickly discovered a blaze originating in the home’s basement.

Rapid response and containment

The Manchester Fire Department dispatched five fire companies to the scene. Crews stretched multiple attack lines, conducted thorough searches of every floor, and ventilated the structure as needed. Their coordinated effort brought the fire under control in roughly 15 minutes, preventing further spread to the rest of the house.

Because the fire originated below ground, the structure suffered extensive damage and is now deemed uninhabitable, according to department officials. The East Hartford Fire Department provided additional assistance, helping to extinguish the flames and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.

Impact on residents

Three individuals were forced to leave the home after the incident. The American Red Cross has stepped in to provide temporary shelter, clothing, and basic necessities for those displaced. A fourth person who was evaluated for smoke inhalation declined transportation to a medical facility, and no other injuries were reported.

Fire marshal investigators remain on site, working to determine the cause of the basement fire. No foul play has been suggested at this time, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Manchester Fire Department.

Community safety reminder

Local officials remind residents of the importance of maintaining working smoke detectors and having an evacuation plan in place. Basement fires can spread quickly, especially in older homes where wiring or heating equipment may be outdated. Prompt reporting of any unusual smells, hissing sounds, or visible smoke can help firefighters contain a blaze before it endangers lives.

The Manchester Fire Department continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as the investigation progresses. Residents in need of assistance or who have concerns about fire safety are encouraged to reach out to the department’s community outreach office.
