The Granary ‘Cue & Brew Does Both Things Right

On a Saturday around noon, the patio at The Granary ‘Cue & Brew fills up fast. Regulars claim the picnic tables early, cold house beer already in hand, while the kitchen fires have been going since morning. The place sits on the north edge of the Pearl development on Avenue A, close enough to the action to draw weekend crowds but operating with enough of its own identity that it never feels like a Pearl satellite.

The setup is a brewpub that takes barbecue seriously — not as a novelty or a branding exercise, but as the actual point. Pitmaster Tim Rattray built the program around craft technique and local sourcing, and the menu reflects genuine experimentation: house-smoked meats, fermented sides, and seasonal specials that change more often than most Texas barbecue joints would ever consider.

The brisket is sliced thick and comes with a bark that holds up under pressure. It eats rich but not greasy, which is the balance most places never quite find. The pork ribs are worth ordering alongside it — the rub leans savory rather than sweet, and the smoke ring is consistent. On any given week there might be smoked lamb shoulder or a rotating sausage made in-house; regulars check in regularly to catch the specials before they sell out, and they usually do.

Sides here aren’t afterthoughts. The fermented jalapeño coleslaw has genuine brightness to it, something acidic to cut through the fat of the meat. The beans are cooked down long and slow. Even the bread — white sandwich slices, the standard Texas barbecue move — is better than average, sourced locally rather than pulled from a commercial bag.

The beer program operates on the same principle as the food: brewed in small batches, rotated frequently. There are usually four to six house taps running, ranging from a light lager that works well with smoked meat to darker options that hold their own against the richer cuts. Prices for a pint run around six to eight dollars. A full meat plate with two sides lands somewhere in the eighteen to twenty-four dollar range depending on what’s on the board that day — not cheap, but the portions are honest.

Seating is first-come at the picnic tables outside or along a few indoor spots near the bar. No reservations. Weekend service moves quickly enough that waits are rarely long, though arriving before 12:30 on a Saturday avoids the thickest part of the rush. Parking along the street or in the Pearl lots nearby is manageable on weekday visits but requires some patience on weekends.

The neighborhood crowd skews local — people who know the Pearl well enough to walk past the more obvious spots and end up here instead. There’s not much in the way of atmosphere beyond the smell of smoke and the ambient noise of people eating well. That’s the whole thing, and it’s enough.

The Granary is open Wednesday through Sunday for lunch and into the early evening. Hours shift slightly by season, so checking ahead saves a wasted trip. It’s the kind of place that rewards showing up without a plan and letting the board decide what’s for lunch.
