Derived from an episode of Forgotten History.

It’s a chilly March night in 1863, and a small group of Confederate riders, led by Colonel John Singleton Mosby, are about to pull off a daring raid on a Union camp. With no shots fired and no alarms sounded, they slip in and out of the camp, capturing a Union general and 30 men. This was just one of many exploits of Mosby’s Rangers, a partisan unit that would become legendary for their bravery, cunning, and discipline. As host Colin D. Heaton and Michael Droberg explain in the series Forgotten History, Mosby’s story is one of intrigue, adventure, and unexpected twists.

Who Was John Singleton Mosby?

Mosby was born on December 6, 1833, in Powhatan County, Virginia. He was a small, frail child who preferred Greek literature to sports and was often bullied, but he always fought back. Mosby’s early life was marked by a series of challenges, including a conviction for the non-fatal shooting of a medical student, which led to his expulsion from college. However, he turned his life around, studying law and eventually becoming a successful lawyer.

Mosby’s entry into the Civil War was marked by his joining the Washington Mounted Rifles, which later became part of the 1st Virginia Cavalry. He quickly distinguished himself as a skilled and brave soldier, catching the attention of General J.E.B. Stuart, who became his mentor. As the war progressed, Mosby became increasingly disillusioned with the conventional military tactics and began to develop his own unique approach to warfare.

Mosby’s Rangers: A New Kind of Warfare

Mosby’s Rangers were a partisan unit that operated behind enemy lines, using guerrilla tactics to disrupt Union supply lines and communication. They were known for their speed, agility, and discipline, and their ability to vanish into the countryside, leaving their enemies bewildered. As Mosby himself said, ‘My men prefer not to carry sabers, but rather revolvers and rifles. We bring no wagon or baggage train, operating as the best example of light cavalry.’

The Union Army was initially baffled by Mosby’s tactics, and they struggled to catch him and his men. However, as the war wore on, Mosby’s reputation grew, and he became a thorn in the side of the Union Army. His most notable action was perhaps the Fairfax raid, in which he captured Union Brigadier General Edwin Stoughton and 30 additional men, without firing a shot or alerting other Union troops in the area.

A Legacy of Respect

Despite fighting for the Confederacy, Mosby earned the respect of his enemies, including Union General Philip Sheridan. After the war, Mosby went on to become a Republican and even supported the Reconstruction era. He never owned slaves and later agreed with emancipation, demonstrating a complex and nuanced character. As President Abraham Lincoln said, ‘I can make Brigadier Generals, but I can’t make horses.’ Mosby had made an impression, and his legacy would endure long after the war was over.

In conclusion, the story of John Singleton Mosby is a fascinating one, full of twists and turns. From his early life to his exploits as a partisan leader, Mosby’s legacy is one of bravery, cunning, and discipline. As we reflect on his story, we are reminded of the complexities of the Civil War and the many individuals who played a role in shaping its outcome.
