The Attic in McKee: A Thrift Store with a Mission to Serve

The Attic, a thrift store located in McKee, Kentucky, has been a cornerstone of community support for decades. Affiliated with the Saint Paul Catholic Mission Church, The Attic operates with a mission mindset, providing affordable goods and assistance to those in need.

Community Support and Affordable Goods

Mary Marks, a parishioner at Saint Paul’s, emphasizes the store’s commitment to serving the community. ‘Whatever we run into in the community or if somebody calls us and they have a need, if we have it, we’ll give it,’ she said. The store offers a wide range of items, including clothing, shoes, and sometimes furniture, all at reasonable prices. Shirts and pants are available for just $2, and movies for $1, making it accessible for everyone.

Store manager Carol Brewer, a lifelong resident of McKee, reflects on her upbringing and how it shaped her compassion for others. ‘I would never change a thing about my raising and the hardships that we had, because it gave me my compassion for other people,’ she stated.

Partnerships and Community Involvement

The Attic’s ability to keep prices low is largely due to the generosity of donors. Recently, a truck from Orphan Grain Train in Indiana delivered a new load of donations, with help from inmates from the Jackson County Detention Center Work Release Program. Some items will be sold in the store, while others may be donated back to those in need within the community.

Marks shared an example of how the store responds to specific needs: ‘Not too long ago we sent Carol people that didn’t have shoes.’ Brewer added, ‘Provided them shoes, or whatever their needs may be.’

Marks sees this work as a way of serving the Lord by meeting the needs of people where they are. The Attic continues to accept donations during its business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents interested in donating can contact Saint Paul’s for more information.
