San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication rolled out its first live football pre‑game broadcast, Bobcat Game Day, on Sept. 12. The show streamed on YouTube ahead of the Bobcats’ home opener against the University of Texas at San Antonio, giving students a hands‑on platform to produce sports media for a public audience.
Hands‑on learning for future media professionals
Bobcat Game Day is designed as a season‑long initiative that will run through the 2026 football season, the university’s inaugural year in the Pac‑12 conference. Faculty, staff and university partners collaborate with students to deliver live coverage at every home game. Participants rotate through a range of professional production roles, including show host, reporter, sports analyst, scriptwriter, video editor, graphic designer, camera operator and producer.
“This first‑of‑its‑kind live pre‑game show and YouTube broadcast gives our students the opportunity to gain real‑world experience while showcasing Texas State athletics to a broader audience,” said Mark Mederson, game‑day coordinator and assistant professor of sports media.
University partners support the effort
The project brings together the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas State Athletics, Texas State Global, the Office of the President and other university partners. Together they create a learning environment that mirrors the fast‑paced world of sports media, allowing students to build portfolio‑ready work that highlights both Texas State athletics and the university’s new Pac‑12 affiliation.
Students will produce content that reaches a public audience, helping them develop the technical and storytelling skills needed in today’s media landscape. The live format also provides immediate feedback, as viewers can comment and engage with the broadcast in real time.
Why the initiative matters for the community
Beyond classroom benefits, Bobcat Game Day expands the visibility of Texas State sports, offering fans, alumni and prospective students a polished, professional pre‑game experience. The show underscores the university’s commitment to integrating academic programs with real‑world applications, a model that strengthens both the local economy and the broader educational mission.
As Texas State embarks on its first Pac‑12 season, the live pre‑game show positions the university as a leader in experiential learning while delivering quality sports coverage to the Central Texas community.
